What is IDFA?

The Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) is a unique and anonymous code assigned by Apple to every iOS device. It helps app developers and marketers measure how users interact with ads and apps without revealing personal information.

Think of the IDFA as the mobile version of a cookie. It lets advertisers understand user behavior across different apps, attribute installs or purchases to specific campaigns, and optimize ad performance.

Users can control whether their IDFA is shared. They can reset it or disable it entirely using Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, introduced in iOS 14.



How IDFA Works

When a user interacts with an ad, the IDFA is passed along in the background to connect different events — for example, an ad click and a subsequent app install.

Before iOS 14, advertisers could easily use the IDFA to track these interactions across apps. After Apple introduced ATT, however, apps must now request permission before accessing the IDFA. If a user declines, the IDFA is replaced with a string of zeros, meaning no tracking can occur.

This change made user tracking opt-in rather than opt-out, dramatically reducing the number of users whose IDFA data is available to advertisers.



The Shift After iOS 14 and ATT

The App Tracking Transparency framework changed how digital advertising works on iOS. It gave users a clear choice: “Allow” or “Ask App Not to Track.”

As a result, advertisers lost much of the detailed user-level data they once relied on. The average global opt-in rate for IDFA access is now around 46%, making large portions of iOS users essentially invisible for targeted advertising and attribution.

To fill that gap, Apple introduced SKAdNetwork (SKAN) — a privacy-first system for measuring ad performance without exposing user identities or device-level data.



Apple’s SKAdNetwork Explained

SKAdNetwork is Apple’s solution for privacy-safe ad attribution. Instead of tracking individuals, it reports aggregated data about which campaigns led to app installs or conversions.

While SKAN protects user privacy, it also brings limitations:

  • Limited campaign data and granularity
  • Delayed reporting of conversions (postbacks)
  • No ability to re-engage specific users
  • Limited lifetime value and ROI visibility

Apple’s SKAdNetwork 4.0 update improved things slightly by adding three postbacks over different time windows, a new crowd anonymity system, hierarchical conversion values (low, medium, high), and a broader source identifier range (up to 10,000 options).

Still, SKAN remains far less detailed than IDFA-based tracking.



Impact of IDFA Restrictions on Advertisers

The reduced access to IDFA has reshaped mobile marketing. Advertisers, publishers, and ad networks now face several key challenges:

1. Measurement

Attribution and performance measurement are harder. Without user-level data, understanding lifetime value (LTV), return on ad spend (ROAS), and conversions has become more complex.

2. Targeting and Remarketing

Advertisers can no longer identify or retarget individual users unless they have explicitly opted in. This weakens the personalization and relevance of ads.

3. Personalization and Optimization

Without IDFA, A/B testing and creative optimization rely on aggregated data, which limits precision and insight.

4. Ad Fraud Detection

Previously, IDFAs helped detect suspicious or duplicate device activity. Now, fraud prevention relies more on statistical modeling and behavioral analysis.

Collect, validate, and enrich SKAN postbacks through a trusted Mobile Measurement Partner (MMP). This helps ensure data accuracy and prevent fraud.

2. Use Predictive Analytics

Machine learning models can estimate campaign performance and user behavior based on early signals.

3. Focus on Aggregated and Cohort Data

Cohort analysis, clean rooms, and media mix modeling (MMM) provide a broader understanding of performance without user-level data.

4. Improve Opt-In Rates

Optimize your ATT prompt messaging and timing to encourage users to allow tracking. Transparency about data usage often improves consent rates.
